A typical liquid bulk trailer holds approximately 6,000 to 7,000 gallons. However, the actual amount it can legally transport also depends on the product's weight and density. The truck, trailer and cargo generally cannot exceed the federal gross vehicle weight limit of 80,000 pounds.
Liquid bulk transportation requires more expensive equipment, specially trained drivers, higher insurance coverage and tank washing after deliveries. Rates may also include empty—or "deadhead"—miles required to position the tanker and travel to an approved wash facility.

The heel is the liquid that remains inside a tank after unloading. It can occur when the unloading location, trailer design or slope of the parking surface prevents the tank from draining completely. Matching the trailer's center- or rear-unloading configuration to the receiving facility can help reduce retained product and disposal costs.
Before loading, the shipper should confirm that the tank is clean, dry, odor-free and appropriate for the commodity. The shipper should also review the washout slip and verify the tank material, previous cargo, hoses, fittings, adapters and transfer equipment.
The receiver should confirm that the correct product has arrived and, where appropriate, take a sample to inspect its condition. The receiving team should verify that hoses are connected to the correct storage tank and that the unloading method and trailer configuration are compatible with the facility.
